Being a part of the visible church doesn’t necessarily make anyone part of the invisible church. It is possible to play the part, talk the talk, and merely profess to be “Christian” without the attendant inward, spiritual transformation by the Holy Spirit. A fearsome tragedy of eternal rejection awaits such nominal Christians when Jesus declares to them, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:23)
On the other hand, as salts and lights of the earth, God desires that the members of his invisible, universal church shine visibly in our crooked and twisted generation (Philippians 2:15). Isn’t it then unfortunate that many believers stay busy with every other thing than shining visibly as lights in the world? That also is a great tragedy!
